Faster buses thanks to better busstops
In April, Gent starts with works concerning the improvement of the public transport circulation. After the works are finished, Gent will be able to provide better service to the many public transport users. A first step is to re-arrange 150 bus stops and make them safer. This means that the buses will be able to stop easier and safer, and to drive faster through the city.
In the 4 years to come, 150 bus and tram stops will receive a new look. The city will provide more shelters and several stops will be bulged out. These projects are all part of the public transport circulation improvement. Bulging out stops means that the future buses will stop in the middle of the street instead of at the side. This will result in the bus being able to leave faster, because the cars are waiting behind the bus. Another advantage is that the surroundings of the bus stops become safer, for both pedestrians and cyclists.Another part of this measure concerns optimizing traffic lights. At 42 crossroads the traffic lights will be better attuned, with separate lights for buses and cyclists. This will also contribute to a better circulation and a safer transport environment.
