Creation of a bicycle registration system in the municipality of Vitoria-Gasteiz

CIVITAS Initiative

Vitoria-Gasteiz has launched a bicycle registration system. The system consists of a database containing information about bicycles and their owners, which aims to detect, recover and return bicycles when they get lost, stolen or abandoned.

The registry stores information about the bicycle in a municipal database. The owner receives an adhesive element that has to be placed on the bicycle, so that it can be more easily identified. This registration is free. This measure intends to encourage the use of the bicycle as a sustainable and healthy method of transport. The security can be increased using an additional system, called 'Bicitronic', in which the bicycle is marked with a small metalic piece to strengthen the bicycle’s identity. The purpose of registration is to address security issues. The requirements for registering a bicycle in the system are: Owner: * Be over 18 years (based in Vitoria-Gasteiz) * Identity number (national or community), passport or alien card in forceBicycle: * Bike identification numberIn addition to the simple registration, the user can go to an authorised installation centre to install the 'Bicitronic' system, which enhances the bicycle’s security.More information, in the project website (in Spanish and Basque):http://www.vitoria-gasteiz.org/registrobicis
