CIVITAS Workshop in Graz: Soft Mobility in Europe - A success-story

CIVITAS Initiative

The overall quality of life is of special importance for whole Europe. This is defined by an intact environment, ideal living conditions, and attractive economic events and also by positive prerequisites for the individual mobility behaviour. Soft Mobility puts people first! Therefore, CIVITAS organised a workshop and study visit in the City of Graz, Austria, on 09-10 February 2011 to enhance the know-how transfer and mutual learning in this field.

The workshop shared best-practices and provided more than 50 participants, coming from 20 cities in nine countries, with the necessary theory and real-life examples that addresses knowledge gaps and enhances relevant skills. The City of Graz and FGM-AMOR, both CIVITAS partners organised this workshop in cooperation with PIMMS transfer (INTERREG IVC), City Network Graz-Maribor (European Territorial Cooperation), ELTIS (Intelligent Energy Europe) and SEE-MMS (Transnational European Programme) to support cities interested in sustainable transport solutions. The workshop was followed by a study visit in Graz on the second day, to extent the theory with practical tools and solutions, done in Graz, to provide the participants with new ideas and solutions.Speakers came from political level, University level and expert level including the experiences of the CIVITAS partners Graz, Krakow and FGM-AMOR as well as from Frankfurt/Main as a very experienced city in Mobility Management measures and public transport. In an open discussion, moderated by Prof Kurt Fallast, the opportunity to provide questions also not directly linked to the presentations, was offered as well and the second day offered a general overview in thematic related mobility measures in Graz shown on a city walking tour including a visit in the Mobility Centre “MOBIL ZENTRAL”, Austria’s first Mobility Centre. In the afternoon a visit at the Styrian Traffic Association with presentations about public transport, special promotion tools and the “Green Net” of Graz was offered as well. As the final session of this second day a political discussion in the office of the Vice Mayor of Graz, Ms Lisa Rücker, was organised. The workshop equipped participants with a thorough understanding of Soft Mobility as a cost-efficient method to provide sustainable urban transport. The participants were ready and willing to examine local challenges from other participants and contributed to group discussion and interactive exercise sessions.Downloads - Workshop PresentationsFinal Programme (Download)List of registered participants (Download)Opening RemarksLisa RÜCKER, Vice Mayor of the City of Graz (Download)Keynote Speech I - Soft MobilityGerhard ABLASSER, City of Graz (Download)Keynote Speech I - Soft MobilityDr Kurt FALLAST, Graz University of Technology (Download)Keynote Speech II - Mobility ManagementDr Johannes THEISSEN, traffiQ Frankfurt/Main (Download)How to promote Sustainable Urban TransportFred DOTTER, Austrian Mobility Research, FGM-AMOR (Download)Soft Mobility in Higher EducationHans-Georg FRANTZ, University of Appl.
