The bike-sharing (bike hire) concept has been around for decades. Since the turn of the millennium, however, such systems have spread across the globe and become an integral part of the sustainable mobility package in many cities.
These schemes traditionally provide public hire bikes at bike ‘docking stations’ throughout the city. With the rapid development of technology and new business models, dockless bike-sharing providers have emerged and boomed in the second half of the 2010s, with especially high penetration in China.
However, their rise in cities globally has not fully exploited the full potential inherent within the concept to improve the active and sustainable mobility offer in cities. At the same time, it has also caused negative externalities, which has made it necessary for cities to develop regulations.
