CIVITAS MOBILIS meets in Ljubljana
From the 22th until the 24th of November 2006, the partner cities of the CIVITAS MOBILIS EC project joined in Ljubljana (Slovenia) covering the progress being made within the project throughout all MOBILIS-cities. During this three day meeting, the host city organised a dedicated workshop on safe cycling. During this workshop, the participants were informed by EC on recent developments regarding cycling in the EU, followed by presentations of cycling safety issues in the four CIVITAS MOBILIS cities Ljubljana, Odense, Toulouse and Venice.
The city of Ljubljana and Toulouse focused mainly on the construction of bicycle lanes and routes throughout their cities. Odense on the other hand reported on a whole range of activities regarding cycling they implemented: introduction of green waves for cyclists, maintenance of cycle paths in wintertime, construction of a cycle centre, introduction of permanent cycle lights. Following the city of Venice explaining its city bicycle plan.Next on the program was a site visit in the city of Ljubljana. Participants were being guided towards critical points for cyclists in the city centre. It was clear that the city of Ljubljana has made a lot of efforts in order to improve cycling within its city centre, including the construction of bicycle lanes and bicycle racks. Although difficulties such as people parking their cars on bicycle lanes and pavements still remain. Within the CIVITAS MOBILIS project the city has started an awareness raising campaign in order to put an end to this prohibited parking.Concluding the workshop, small group discussions were being held on best practices in promoting safe cycling.
