Bridging the gap: gender issues in transportation are discussed in Paris

CIVITAS Initiative

The 5th International Conference on Women’s Issues in Transportation (WIiT) will be held in Paris - La Défense (France) on 14-16 April 2014, focusing on the general question of “bridging the gap” between men and women in matters related to transportation. The event brings its outlook into policy making issues, planning and engineering processes, deepening the understanding of women’s issues at urban, regional and national levels.

A major goal of the WIiT conference is to deepen understanding of women not just as passive recipients of transport services, but as actors that can impact sustainable access, safe mobility, policy development, governance and oversight, service delivery and business expansion. The focus areas are:

  • Transport policy, transport patterns and mobility;
  • Health, safety and personal security;
  • Sustainability;
  • Transportation impacts on careers and careers impacts on transportation.

In addition three cross-cutting themes will be considered:

  • Gender research issues;
  • Issues related to converting research findings into policy;
  • Issues pertaining to narrowing the gap between developed countries and developing countries with respect to women’s issues in transportation.

Importantly, on 15th of April at 09.00-10.30 am, in the plenary session “BRIDGING THE GAP 1: GENDER” chaired by Mary Crass and Ariane Dupont, Silvia Maffii (TRT Trasporti e Territorio) on behalf of the CIVITAS Thematic Group “Integrated Planning” will discuss on “Transport as a key element for women to participate to social activities and work”.
