Bikes go electric in Aalborg

CIVITAS Initiative

As part of the commuter travel plan a group of employees at one of the participating companies is offered the possibility to test an electric bike as a new green way of getting to/from work.

In the commuter travel plan the employees’ travel behavior has been mapped out through a survey. The survey showed that the main part of the commuters used the car. In addition, the survey showed that only a small group of the employees used bike to/from work. The purpose of introducing the electric bikes to the employees is to increase the level of cyclist at the company. In a co-operation with the company 10 of the employees were offered to test the electric bikes for a period of 4 months. The participants had to be previously car users, be willing to use the new bike 4 of 5 days pr. week, and have longer than 5 km to work. The electric bike is a bicycle equipped with an electric motor that only assists the cyclists when pedaling. Therefore, the cyclist still needs to be active in order to get moving. Thus, the electric bike constitutes an environmental friendly and health promoting way of travelling. Compared to a normal bike the electric bike provides an alternative that minimizes barriers to cycling such as level of fitness and travel distance.
