Better information eases transport access for older people in Madrid district
A new measure introduced in Madrid as part of CIVITAS ECCENTRIC is helping older people there to better access transport services.
A few weeks ago, visitors to the Santa Eugenia Municipal Senior Citizens' Centre in the Madrid district of Villa de Vallecas were greeted by something unexpected: a giant screen on the wall between the reception and door.
This new feature broadcasts the schedules of the three bus lines going to four nearby stops in real time. The screen is connected to a computer, which in turn extracts the exact data on bus journeys from the server of the municipality’s bus company.
The screen means that no-one has to wait alone at the bus stop in the roaring sun or bitter cold and rain, both of which are possible in Madrid depending on the season. Instead, they can remain in the centre, which offers a safe and comfortable environment at all times of year.
