Acceptance Study of the “Clean Air Programme for Stuttgart”

CIVITAS Initiative

An acceptance study showed a high level of awareness of the “Clean Air Programme for Stuttgart” among the citizens of Stuttgart. In a representative citizen poll 409 citizens were interviewed by telephone about the air monitoring program and the “Clean Air Programme for Stuttgart”.

Stuttgart’s citizens keep particulate matter as a high environmental- and health risk and support even restrictive measures to improve the situation. Two-third of the citizens know about the “Clean Air Programme for Stuttgart”. This is the result of an acceptance study, realized by the Institute for Social Science at Universität Stuttgart and dealing with the topic air monitoring. Just 5% of the 409 polled citizens do not now anything about the particulate matter problem. But more than 70% think that the air in the City of Stuttgart is polluted. In this context 79% of the polled citizens see the particulate matter as a high health risk.Asked for measures to improve the situation, highest acceptance finds the heavy traffic ban with 79% approval. Also the upgrading of the bicycle network (66% approval) and the traffic ban in the new environmental zone (65% approval) are welcomed by the polled citizens. The citizen poll was carried out form March to May 2007 and presented recently to the City Council.
