Thematic areas

Summary

The main aim of the measure is to improve parking management in the city of Brno by providing public information on vacant parking spaces for all parking facilities in Brno and for a selected street in the city centre through advanced ITS and information technology. Real-time information on parking locations will be provided into the vehicle to easily locate parking spaces close to its destination.

Implementing sustainable mobility

Objectives

  • introduce an unified system for traffic data collection of all connected systems in Brno
  • introduce high quality traffic information (e.g. parking info or traffic intensity/flow of traffic) for the whole city
  • reduce time for searching for free parking spaces in the centre by 20 % (in particular car park)
  • reduce fuel consumption and emissions by 3 %
  • reduce travel times (congestion)
  • introduce on-street parking on the other streets (if evaluation of cost and benefits will be positive)
  • achieve higher occupancy of parking garages
  • support residential parking (equal rights currently available for visitors and residents but only residential parking during night after implementation of this measure)

Innovative aspects

  • incomparably better transport organisation
  • maximisation of the usage of parking capacities for both – visitors and residents
  • use of modern information technologies, tailored information (car navigation system, web app).

What will the measure consist of precisely?

Part 1

The purpose of this part of the measure is to:

  • gain data on the number of occupied parking spaces
  • compare data about number of occupied parking spaces with the total number of parking spaces and thus gain data about the number of vacant parking spaces
  • display the data about the number of vacant parking spaces in the concrete car park and use data to direct drivers to vacant parking.

Part 2

The purpose of this part of the measure is to:

  • register presence of a vehicle
  • collect and transmit data from sensors to a central server for further processing
  • monitor the occupancy of the parking spaces
  • navigate drivers to vacant parking spaces via web page and mobile application.

Progress

What has been done?

  • tender preparation for application and tender documentation to select software system provider have been completed (tender starts beginning 2015)
  • site visit in Malaga 24-25 November 2014 on smart parking solutions in Malaga
  • discussion about documentation needed for detectors and occupancy monitoring technology tendering
  • documentation for tender of the vacant parking places monitoring technology
  • tender for the subcontractor of the vacant parking places monitoring technology
  • implementation of technology and software

Outcomes

  • 73 sensors on Rooseveltova Street have been installed which provide real-time information on vacant parking spaces to vehicles. Sensors have been in operation from September 2015.
  • The mobile application for the navigation to vacant parking spaces has been successfully developed. The trial version was launched from 1 April 2016 and full version was in operation from 1 July 2016.
  • The time necessary for finding vacant parking spaces on Rooseveltova Street has been reduced (after implementation about 20% of drivers find easily vacant parking spaces).
