Demand & urban space management
  • Parking management and pricing

Summary

This measure is intended to provide multimodal real-time traffic and travel information to travellers.

By the end of the measure the City of Brno will have developed a software application revolving around a system of payment for parking that is linked with the system of payment for public transport.

Implementing sustainable mobility

The City of Brno is preparing a new idea related to parking referred to as the 'Strategy of Parking in the City of Brno'. This document is crucial for advancing urban mobility and will be a part of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP). The main aim is to have an information system and software application which will interconnect all related systems.

Objectives

  • To build a parking information system together with a telematic system for directing vehicles towards free parking sites
  • To create a motivational payment system according to the types of parking lots in the central part of the city
  • To develop a unified system of gathering of the traffic and operational data from these systems, with data transfer to the BKOM central technical control centre, as well as providing the data to the Traffic Information Centre

Innovative aspects

  • Maximisation of the parking capacity usage together with minimisation of the transport outputs
  • Usage of modern information technologies, tailored information (car navigation system, web app)
  • Work efficiency, i.e. 'To efficiently manage every public parking space'.

This measure will oversee the selection of information system, procurement of software and development of telematic devices. All information exchange will occur through a web interface.

Progress

What has been done:

  • During the first phase of the project a large amount of relevant data has been collected.

What will be done:

  • A guidance system built by SMB with different transport signs (financed by the SMB budget not the project budget), with data entered directly into the system
  • System providing information for travelers (through smart phones) about traffic situations in real time
  • Access to transportation applications through electronic enrolment (card for paying to use public transport and parking facilities)
  • Provision of information about empty spaces both on municipal parking lots and on private parking lots
  • Use of up-to-date information technology providing information directly to users (navigation system for vehicles, web application)
  • Provision of traffic information

Only part of the technical equipment will be financed by the project budget: the software system for parking fee payment connected with system for public transport fee payment.

Outcomes

  • Access to transportation applications through electronic enrolment (card for paying travel expenses in public transport and for paying parking fee)
  • Use of up-to-date information technology providing information directly to users (navigation system for vehicles, web application)
  • Efficient management of the public parking spaces in Brno leading to maximisation of the parking capacity while minimising transport emissions and time necessary to locate vacant spaces. This also leads to smoother private car transport and public transport (indirectly) in the city, especially during morning peak hours when a relatively high number of drivers look for vacant spaces and create unnecessary congestion.
