The city of Ponferrada demonstrates a modal split of 32 percent private car, 33 percent motorbike, 10 percent car sharing, 2 percent bicycle, 38 percent pedestrian and 13 percent public transport.

Its strategic approach to transport management has resulted in a sustainable urban transport plan, which is awaiting approval by the city council. Its main targets include the development of cycling, walking and motorized mobility.

Progress in the development of sustainable urban mobility has been good as the result of some remarkable successes. Achievements to date include the introduction of innovative measures and technologies such as restricted access to the city center, a GPS system in buses and a bike rental system. Special emphasis on clean vehicles and alternative fuels has been demonstrated through the increased use of biofuels in motorized public transport. Challenges included reducing the number of parking places in order to increase the size of passenger zone. Future plans include extending the car-free zones and increasing the use of biofuels in public transport.

Ponferrada is working on the implementation of sustainable urban transport measures in cooperation with professional local transportation companies.
