Leoben (Austria)

Leoben is a Styrian city in central Austria on the Mur River, where the river valley and surrounding hills shape transportation linkages and modal choices. As a regional industrial and university centre, Leoben has around 28,182 residents (2026) and spans roughly 108 km², with a high share of forested terrain affecting urban expansion and transit planning.

Sustainability is embedded in local mobility-oriented strategies and initiatives. The city has been working with a long-term traffic development plan promoting walking and cycling infrastructure, improving public transport quality and limiting car dominance in the centre. Leoben also enhances its multimodal system with shared electric scooters, e-bike sharing, e-lastenrads and Rail & Drive carsharing, all bookable via the Wegfinder app, broadening low-emission travel alternatives.

Public transport electrification features city acquisition of electric buses, supported by local climate funding, while the municipality promotes use of the Klimaticket Steiermark through incentives, increasing ridership.
