Brussels (Belgium)
Brussels, the capital of Belgium and principal city of the Brussels-Capital Region, is a densely populated metropolitan hub sprawled across about 161 km² with roughly 1.2 million residents. Its flat topography and role as a regional and European centre generate intense mobility demand for daily commuters and international visitors. Brussels is implementing ambitious sustainability and transport strategies aimed at reducing car dependency, cutting emissions and enhancing quality of life. A flagship policy, the regional Good Move mobility plan (2020–2030), advocates for safer walking and cycling infrastructure, more efficient public transport, intermodal corridors, reduced through-traffic in neighbourhoods and improved traffic flow to support modal shift away from private cars.
At the municipal level, the BXL 2050 Municipal Plan for Sustainable Development sets long-term objectives including a ‘10-minute city’ vision that prioritises active and shared transport, public space redesign, and spatial planning that reduces travel distances.
Brussels’ transit operator STIB-MIVB is electrifying bus fleets and upgrading trams and metros as part of its green transport investments.
