Lahti (Finland)

Lahti is a regional city of about 121,000 residents in southern Finland, located on a bay at the southern end of Lake VesijƤrvi and intersected by major road and rail corridors, affecting transport planning and accessibility. The city, European Green Capital 2021, aims to be carbon-neutral by 2025 and prioritises sustainable mobility in its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP), integrated into the broader Lahti suunta strategic planning — promoting walking, cycling, public transport and enhanced traffic arrangements in the city centre to help achieve a goal where sustainable modes account for over half of all trips.

Lahti’s public transport fleet is rapidly transitioning to alternative fuels and electric buses, and the city operates an extensive pedestrian and cycling network with 570 km of paths plus 500 shared city bikes (Mankeli). Citizen-focused innovation like the CitiCAP personal carbon trading pilot demonstrated ways to shift commuter behaviour toward low-emission choices, feeding into long-term mobility strategy
