Durres (Albania)

Durrës is a historic port city on the flat Adriatic coastal plain of western Albania, located between the mouths of the Erzen and Ishëm rivers and about 30 km west of Tirana. It is the country’s second-largest city, with a municipality population of approximately 153,614 and an area of about 338 km² (municipality level).

Geography strongly shapes mobility planning: its coastal, low-lying terrain and status as a major seaport and rail terminus make road, rail, and sea connections central to transport. Urban mobility faces pressures from tourism peak-season traffic, freight movements tied to port activity, and congestion on the Tirana–Durrës corridor. Durrës is engaging in sustainable mobility planning, including drafting an urban mobility plan to integrate transport modes, pedestrian zones, low-traffic areas, and reduce car dependency to lower emissions.
