Varna (Bulgaria)

Varna is Bulgaria’s third-largest city and a key Black Sea port and tourism hub, with approximately 318,737 residents and sprawling across about 232 km² along the Gulf of Varna on the Black Sea coast. Its coastal geography and role as both a seaport and regional centre shape mobility planning by concentrating transport demand in central areas and around coastal routes, while tourism peaks amplify travel pressures seasonally. The municipality is advancing sustainable transport through strategic programmes such as the Varna Green City Action Plan, which aims to improve air quality, enhance active travel and support public transit infrastructure including mobility hubs and ITS systems.

The city is also modernising transport with large-scale investments in bus rapid transit, e-vehicles and cycling paths under EU and regional programmes supporting cleaner urban mobility.
