Gorna Oryahovitsa (Bulgaria)

Gorna Oryahovitsa is a town in northern Bulgaria’s Veliko Tarnovo Province, located in a flat river valley corridor next to the Yantra River, with about 27,317 residents and tight connectivity to rail and road networks important for regional travel. The town faces mobility challenges from local and transit freight traffic through the central area, congestion, noise and high emissions from aged buses and private cars. In response, it became the first Bulgarian city to adopt a Sustainable Urban Transport Plan (SUTP) under the CIVITAS Plus Renaissance project, formally integrating sustainable mobility into municipal strategy to curb traffic-related impacts, reorganise circulation, and promote cleaner transport modes.

This transport plan aimed to increase environmental protection, introduce cleaner public transport vehicles, reorganise parking, and promote modal shift interventions to improve quality of life, though implementation remains ongoing.
