Bologna (Italy)
Bologna, a historic city in northern Italy, is a frontrunner in sustainable urban mobility innovation. As the first Italian metropolitan area to adopt a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP), Bologna is reshaping mobility to prioritize people over cars. The SUMP targets a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and envisions 60% of trips made by walking, cycling, and public transport by 2030.
The city’s dense, compact layout and medieval streets challenge traditional mobility systems, making multimodal, low-emission solutions essential. Bologna is investing in a modern tram network, expanding cycling infrastructure through the “Bicipolitana,” and integrating shared mobility services. Managed by TPER, its public transport includes a robust bus and regional rail system, with a strong commitment to electrification. Bologna’s approach aligns with EU Green Deal objectives, positioning the city as a model for inclusive, resilient, and low-carbon urban transport.
