Usti nad Labem (Czechia)

Ústí nad Labem is a statutory city in north-western Czechia along the Elbe (Labe) River, acting as a key industrial centre and transport hub near the German border, with about 90,866 inhabitants over ~94 km². Its valley geography with surrounding uplands and important railway and waterway connections shapes transport planning and sustainable mobility challenges, including traffic flows, air quality and multimodal accessibility. The city has developed a Plán udržitelné městské mobility (SUMP) to address congestion, enhance safety, improve public space and promote sustainable travel behaviours by supporting walking, cycling and efficient public transport.

Public transport modernisation includes ongoing electrification of trolleybus services and procurement of advanced trolleybuses, while local authorities explore hydrogen-powered buses to reduce CO₂ and emissions. Community engagement in mobility planning and “Mobility Week” events underscores the city’s commitment to greener and more inclusive transport.
