Dresden (Germany)
Dresden, the capital of Saxony, Germany, is a city of approximately 550,000 residents, covering an area of 328.3 km². Situated on the Elbe River and surrounded by hills, its diverse topography influences urban mobility planning.
The city's transportation network is centered around the Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe (DVB), which operates an extensive system of trams, buses, and ferries. Dresden's S-Bahn network connects the city with surrounding regions, facilitating efficient regional mobility. The MOBI initiative, launched in 2018, promotes sustainable urban mobility through services like car-sharing, bike-sharing, and on-demand shuttles, in collaboration with partners such as nextbike by TIER and Via.
The city's commitment to sustainability is further reflected in its extensive cycling infrastructure, including over 370 km of bike lanes, and the Elberadweg, a popular cycling route along the Elbe River. Dresden’s modal split was 24 percent for walking; 17 for cycling; 21 for public transport and 38 percent for private cars, according to results of the SrV household survey on mobility.
