Ljubljana (Slovenia)
Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, has established itself as a leader in sustainable urban mobility. The city introduced its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) in 2012, with updates in 2017, aiming to balance travel modes: one-third public transport, one-third cycling and walking, and one-third private vehicles.
A notable initiative is the BicikeLJ public bicycle rental system, launched in 2011, which as of 2023, boasts over 840 bikes and 84 stations, facilitating approximately 1.5 million rentals annually. The city also implemented a Park and Ride (P+R) system to reduce urban traffic congestion, providing parking facilities at city outskirts with convenient public transport connections to the center. Complementing these efforts, Ljubljana participates in national programs promoting sustainable mobility, including reforms to enhance public transport and infrastructure for alternative fuels.
