Bergamo (Italy)

Bergamo, located in northern Italy in the Lombardy region, has around 120,000 inhabitants and covers 40.16 km². Its distinctive geography—divided between the historic hilltop CittĆ  Alta and the modern CittĆ  Bassa—creates specific mobility challenges, requiring strong vertical and intermodal connections. The surrounding Alpine foothills and its role within a বৃহ broader metropolitan area also generate significant commuting flows.

Mobility remains car-dominated (around 53% of trips), though walking and cycling already account for over 30%, reflecting compact urban form and growing investment in active mobility.

The city’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) focuses on reducing car dependency, improving public transport integration, and enhancing public space and accessibility. Key measures include expanding cycling infrastructure, promoting shared mobility, and protecting the historic centre from traffic.

Recent initiatives, such as bike-sharing expansion and new cycle lanes, further support modal shift. Overall, Bergamo aims to balance accessibility, environmental sustainability and heritage preservation.
