Haifa (Israel)
Haifa, located in northern Israel along the Mediterranean coast, is the countryās third-largest city and a major port and tech hub. Nestled on the steep slopes of Mount Carmel, the cityās unique topographyārising sharply from sea level to hilltop residential and commercial areasāhas significantly shaped its approach to urban mobility.
To enhance livability and reduce environmental impact, Haifa is actively pursuing sustainable transport solutions. The city operates the Metronit, a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system spanning 60 km with 120 buses, serving approximately 92,000 passengers daily.
Additionally, the HaifaāNazareth Light Rail, a 41 km tram-train line, is under development and expected to open in 2027, aiming to serve 100,000 passengers daily. Haifa also features the Carmelit, the world's shortest underground funicular railway, and Israel's first urban cable carāboth designed to navigate the city's steep terrain. Challenges remain, however, including limited cycling infrastructure and accessibility barriers for people with limited mobility.
