Fredrikstad (Norway)

Fredrikstad, situated at the mouth of the Glomma River in southeastern Norway. Its unique geography, featuring waterways and a dispersed urban layout, presents both challenges and opportunities for sustainable mobility planning.

To address these, Fredrikstad is developing a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) in collaboration with the SUM project. The plan aims to reduce car dependency—currently at 59% of all trips—and promote sustainable transport modes like cycling (9%) and public transit (8%). Key initiatives include enhancing cycling infrastructure, improving public and commercial transport accessibility, and developing efficient traffic hubs.

Additionally, the city operates a municipally funded ferry system, integrating waterborne transport into its mobility strategy. These efforts align with Norway's National Transport Plan 2025–2036, which emphasizes efficient, environmentally friendly, and safe transport systems nationwide.
