Nea Propontida (Greece)
Nea Propontida is a municipality located in the region of Central Macedonia, Greece. It is situated along the coast of the Thermaic Gulf, offering scenic views and access to the Aegean Sea. The municipality encompasses several towns and villages, serving as a hub for commerce, agriculture, and tourism in the region. Residents and visitors navigate the area using private vehicles, taxis, and intercity buses.
The lack of integrated urban and transport planning, the proximity to the urban complex of Thessaloniki that generates daily commuting, its situation as a crossing point at the entrance to the holiday areas of Kassandra and Sithonia, the fact that it is a popular tourist destination with its population increasing significantly in the summer season, and the contrasts of the coastal zone and hinterland have created a number of traffic issues and pressure in terms of mobility.
The biggest challenges concerning mobility that Nea Propontida is facing are:
- Intensified traffic congestion during peak periods of tourist activity
- Low use of active modes of transportation (bicycle and pedestrian)
- Limited use of public transport
Some of the city's goals in that area include:
- Ensuring accessibility of services for pedestrians and people with disabilities
- Development of cycling infrastructure and increasing the number of trips made by bicycle
- Appropriate regulations and organization of the road infrastructure
- Enhancing the quality of public transport services
- Managing on-street and off-street parking problems
- Strengthening of the Municipality’s identity (branding) and promotion of the city's landmarks
