Guimarães (Portugal)
Guimarães is a historic city and municipality in northern Portugal’s Braga district, with a population of about 156,800 and covering approximately 241 km². The city’s topography and river corridors shape its urban structure and mobility patterns, while its UNESCO-listed historic centre and suburban spread require integrated transport planning to balance accessibility with conservation. Guimarães has committed to sustainable mobility through its Plano de Mobilidade Urbana Sustentável (PMUS), currently under development to guide long-term transport interventions promoting walking, cycling, public transport and reduced private car use (Phases I–III are underway).
The municipality is also updating its SUMP and assessing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) feasibility with EU advisory support to strengthen climate neutrality and accessibility goals. Local initiatives include celebrating European Mobility Week, promoting inclusive mobility, and investing in active and public transport infrastructure alongside demand management. As European Green Capital 2026, Guimarães embeds mobility within its broader sustainability and climate action agenda.
