Belgrade (Serbia)
Belgrade, the capital and largest city of Serbia, is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. One of Europe’s oldest cities, it is also the largest urban center in the Balkan Peninsula.
Belgrade’s public transport system includes buses, trams, trolleybuses, city rail, and taxis, with approximately 1,500 vehicles carrying 1.7 million passengers daily. The General Urban Plan aims for public transport to account for 45–50% of daily trips. To achieve this, the city has acquired new trams, buses, and trolleybuses and plans to expand the urban rail network.
Belgrade is also improving conditions for pedestrians and cyclists, with around 60 km of cycling routes already in place and additional infrastructure planned. New pedestrian zones and “home zones” are being introduced to enhance safety and accessibility. These measures are part of a broader strategy to develop a sustainable, integrated urban mobility system that balances public transport, cycling, and walking with city growth.
