UN Task Force Recommends post-COVID steps for Green and Healthy Sustainable Transport

PEP cover page

Even before the emergence of COVID-19, countries across Europe have been at the forefront of developing sustainable mobility solutions that focus on health and the environment. Now, with a post-COVID future to look forward to, further attention must be given to ensuring that users of mobility solutions need not worry about risks to their health. This where the United Nations Transport, Health and Environment Pan-European Programme (THE PEP) comes in.

THE PEP draws together European countries and unites three sectors of the economy - transport, health and the environment. It provides countries with the opportunity to share best practice and develop new policies. It therefore provides a platform for accelerating transformation in the transport sector and making said transformation irreversible. Recommendations developed by a Task Force under THE PEP provide European countries with the opportunity to 'lock in' sustainable transport solutions for the future. This Task Force was established to help facilitate the post-COVID-19 transition to a 'new normal' with sustainable and healthy transport solutions. The Task Force was tasked to propose a set of recommendations that could support countries in the development of these solutions. The recommendations are also in line with major climate processes and instruments, like the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement.

These recommendations were released in April, until the title of Recommendations for Green and Healthy Sustainable Transport – “Building Forward Better”.

In addition to an evaluation of the impact of the pandemic on European transport systems and a call for action to build forward better, it includes eight central themes of focus:

1. Public space allocation for transport and spatial planning

2. Increasing investment in public transport

3. Encouraging the adoption of e-mobility solutions

4. Introducing mobility management solutions

5. Facilitating the adoption of innovation and technology

6. Supporting active mobility as a sustainable and healthy mode of transport

7. Rebuilding the transport system in a fair and inclusive way

Further information on the recommendations can be found in the official United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) press release.
