On 30 September 30th and 1 October 2024, the Urban Air Mobility Initiative Cities Community (UIC2) came together for a high-impact workshop at the CIVITAS Forum in Parma. This pivotal event brought together experts, city representatives, and UAM stakeholders to advance the governance of the community and share best practices from across Europe. The discussions not only set the groundwork for future governance models, but also highlighted the progress in UAM integration within urban mobility systems.
Workshop Key Milestones and Highlights
Handover of UIC2 Funding Request to the European Commission
Following a warm welcome from key speakers, including Pia Peitl from the European Commission, Vassilis Agouridas from ERTICO-ITS EUROPE and Reginald Tricker from the CIVITAS Initiative, one of the defining moments of the workshop was the official handover of the UIC2 funding request letter to the European Commission. This critical step signals the UIC2 community’s unified request for financial support to drive the integration of UAM across European cities, with particular attention to TEN-T regulation and the enhancement of urban infrastructure. This funding will be essential for accelerating innovation and ensuring cities are equipped to adopt UAM technologies.
Defining the UIC2 Governance Model
Another core topic was the evolution of the UIC2 governance structure, where UIC2 members led a brainstorming session to outline a potential governance model for the community. Members collaboratively explored the roles and responsibilities needed to guide UAM development, ensuring cities have the right frameworks to incorporate UAM into their mobility ecosystems. This was a key opportunity to shape how UAM will be governed in the coming years, providing cities with clear pathways to navigate this emerging space.
Italian Insights: UAM Integration in Italy
The Italian experience in UAM integration took center stage as Davide Drago from ENAC and Calogero Giammusso from UrbanV shared their insights into how Italy is embedding UAM into its urban mobility planning. Their presentations offered a firsthand look at national strategies and challenges, enriching the discussions with practical examples of UAM’s impact on Italian cities.
Sharing Best European Practices
A major focus of the second day was the discussion on best practices from across Europe. UIC2 members exchanged ideas on how various cities are tackling UAM integration, drawing on successful examples from leading urban regions. Thiago Tavares from CINEA added to the discussion by offering insights into how EU-funded projects are driving innovation in UAM, giving cities the tools they need to secure funding and advance their UAM initiatives.
Next Steps: Upcoming Workshop in Brussels
Looking ahead, UIC2 has already set the date for its next major event. The next physical workshop will take place on 4 December 2024, in Brussels. The event will focus on eVTOLs and Drone Regulation. This will continue the momentum built in Parma, ensuring UIC2 stays at the forefront of UAM development in Europe.
