Thessaloniki has been officially chosen as the host city for the CIVITAS Forum 2026, following an announcement made at the Urban Mobility Days 2025 in Vilnius, Lithuania. The city was selected for its strong commitment to sustainable mobility and its active, long-standing engagement within the CIVITAS community.
A recognised CIVITAS city and recipient of the EU Mission City Label, Thessaloniki has established itself as a leader in urban mobility transformation. The city is home to multiple innovations, including an operational driverless metro system, restructured bus corridors, active mobility corridors, and a forward-thinking EV charging strategy. These initiatives are supported by renowned institutions such as CERTH/HIT and local universities, helping to position Thessaloniki at the forefront of research-driven, sustainable urban transport.
Conference attendees will have the opportunity to engage with these developments through a series of site visits, showcasing best practices in Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS), logistics decarbonisation, and inclusive infrastructure design—offering valuable, replicable lessons for cities across Europe.
Beyond its mobility credentials, Thessaloniki impressed with its capacity to host large-scale international events, including annual fairs and expos that attract over 200,000 visitors. The city's strong logistical infrastructure, extensive hotel availability, and direct international air connections via SKG Airport ensure easy access and a high-quality attendee experience.
The CIVITAS Forum 2026 will also reflect Thessaloniki’s citizen-focused approach. With planned accessibility measures, free delegate transport, and youth and volunteer involvement, the event will bring mobility discussions to the broader public, reinforcing the city’s commitment to inclusive urban development.
With firm support from local stakeholders and a clear vision for sustainable mobility, Thessaloniki offers a vibrant and forward-thinking setting for the CIVITAS Forum 2026.
