Software evaluation workshop empowers CIVITAS Funchal technicians

CIVITAS Initiative

Improving air quality is a core goal of CIVITAS and Funchal. Keen to support its staff in this challenge, CIVITAS MIMOSA Funchal organised at the start of May, a two day training workshop in the emissions evaluation software system known as COPERT 4.

COPERT, developed back in the 80’s under a previous European project, was designed to estimate emissions from road transport allowing countries to develop official annual national inventories. Using basic information on the operating vehicle stock and activity level in the area considered, the COPERT software measures emission factors for all pollutants from road transport vehicles, including exhaust (CO, HC, NOx, PM) and non-exhaust emissions (fuel evaporation and PM from tyre and brake wear). The workshop, given by consultancy firm OCCAM, experts in energy and environment evaluation, addressed various topics, such as the software limitations and the COPERT 4 emission models for national, regional or local level. To get the most out of the workshop, the participating technicians tested COPERT using their own data, namely Horários do Funchal and Funchal´s Municipality fleet as well as the data from tourist buses. Following this process, all results were presented and discussed by participants. Overall, the event proved to be an important catalyst for CIVITAS technicians to learn a new tool that will support upcoming evaluation activities.  For those interested in testing the software, COPERT can be downloaded and purchased at a reasonable price.
