Travelling to sporting events can often cause disruption in our daily lives. For many, a peaceful weekend walk can become a challenge when traffic spikes and pollution increases, especially in neighbourhoods near large venues. The strain on public spaces, local communities and the environment is evident. However, the solution lies in rethinking how we approach mobility.

Launched in 2015, the #RomaGiocaSostenibile initiative aims to make Rome a more sustainable city, improving the quality of people’s lives by promoting public transport and active mobility measures. By shifting focus from private vehicles to sustainable transport options, we can reduce congestion, lower emissions and make the city more accessible for all. Rome is a gem and only through a sustainable transport approach can we fully appreciate it.

As Italy and Wales's rugby teams prepare to face off this Saturday at Rome's Olympic Stadium, the 2025 edition also commemorates another significant milestone: #RomaGiocaSostenibile celebrates its 10th anniversary. Founded by Roma Servizi per la Mobilità, the initiative has been supported by CIVITAS projects like the ongoing UPPER project, and the concluded cycling project, Handshake. #RomaGiocaSostenibile is the brainchild of Francesco Iacorossi, who is part of the UPPER project.

#RomaGiocaSostenibile brings together local authorities, mobility experts and community members to find innovative solutions for a city-wide transformation. Over the past decade, significant strides have been made in promoting public transport, cycling and walking as the preferred sustainable transport options.
