Regional Demand for School Outreach Activities

CIVITAS Initiative

One of the biggest challenges of CIVITAS relates to the knock on effect of measures both inside and outside the CIVITAS PLUS cities. Funchal's school outreach activities have drawn the attention of other schools on the Madeiran island.

Awareness raising and behaviour change measures such as school mobility campaigns, pedestrian activities and CIVITAS participation in local events have been crucial in disseminating the CIVITAS message not only within Funchal but throughout Madeira. Impressed by the muncipality’s school intervention activities within Funchal, a school from the North Western part of the Madeiran island requested a presentation by the MIMOSA team on the 13 MIMOSA sustainable mobility measures currently being implemented in Funchal. The presentation, attended by 50 students from age 10 upwards and geography teachers, involved a Q&A session, the distribution of a leaflet and merchandising material and an invitation to keep in contact on activities via the CIVITAS & Funchal official websites as well as the MIMOSA Funchal Facebook page. As always, two-way communications has been crucial and student feedback from this particular schools outreach project will continue to play a part in further school mobility campaigns currently in development for the city of Funchal.
