New urban mobility infrastructure in Craiova

CIVITAS Initiative

Extensive construction has been launched in Craiova this spring. Urban transport infrastructure is being improved with the construction of an overpass and the rehabilitation of the tram-line.

The overpass will overtake the traffic of the main road artery, linking the city from East to West. This urban infrastructure project aims to: Optimise traffic Improve mobility Rehabilitate pedestrian spacesThanks to this new passage there will be a 10% reduction in the time taken to travel through the city, eliminating the intersection waiting time, reducing GHG emissions and reorganising green spaces under the passage area. Craiova Municipality together with the constructor and RAT (local public transport company) have developed a traffic management plan aimed to the reduction of the discomfort of the traffic participants. To reduce the impact on people's lives during the construction time, the Municipality used various mass-media channels to prepare the population and together with the police distributed leaflets with the new public transport routes. The rehabilitation of a 5km tram-line began back-to-back with the passage construction. The overpass will be completed in 2012 and will be followed by other large investment projects in transport infrastructure including connecting the underpass and parking to the overpass construction already in progress.
