On Wednesday, 7 May 2025, Lead City Dresden was awarded the EU Cities Mission Label at the third EU Cities Mission Conference in Vilnius. The recognition by the European Commission highlights Dresden’s ongoing commitment to becoming a climate-friendly, sustainable, and future-oriented urban centre.
As one of 112 model cities in the EU Cities Mission, Dresden is already implementing innovative, project-based measures—particularly at the district level. These include the creation of clean energy districts through the smart integration of heating networks, heat pumps, and building refurbishments; new mobility solutions using advanced technologies such as flexible charging via charging robots, automated connected driving, and traffic optimisation through a 5G communication network; and participatory approaches in municipal heat planning.
With its Integrated Energy and Climate Protection Concept (IEK) currently under consultation, municipal heat planning underway, and work progressing on the Dresden Mobility Plan 2035+, the city is laying key strategic foundations for a sustainable future. Lord Mayor of the City of Dresden, Dirk Hilbert, commented on the award:
“Receiving the Mission Label solidifies Dresden’s position as an innovative and forward-thinking city while simultaneously strengthening collaboration with innovation partners—both locally and across Europe.”
