metaCCAZE Project in Malta

The metaCCAZE project is making notable progress in its Follower City, Gozo, in Malta, as it explores the implementation of an autonomous, on-demand e-bus. Local project partners have conducted several site visits to evaluate potential locations for pilot activities. In August 2024, partners assessed potential e-bus routes. Their evaluation focused on key factors such as the surrounding land use, existing infrastructure, and the specific needs of the local community. This was followed by additional site visits to locations across Malta, including Ta’ QaliKalkara, and Ħad-Dingli, during October and November 2024.

By conducting these site assessments, project partners gained valuable insights into potential obstacles, such as navigation complexities, the availability of charging infrastructure, and the adequacy of existing bus stops. These visits also highlighted the preparatory work needed to ensure the successful demonstration of the autonomous e-bus. Further assessment on other possible routes is being carried out. This is an essential first step to the implementation of the metaCCAZE project and the successful demonstration of the first autonomous e-bus in the Maltese Islands.

As part of the metaCCAZE project, Malta is exploring ways to transition towards greener, smarter transport systems that are more aligned with climate-neutral goals. By participating in the project, Malta aims to improve its urban mobility infrastructure, reduce emissions, and ensure a more sustainable future for its residents while gaining insights from leading European cities on clean and connected mobility solutions.
