metaCCAZE design activities: Tailoring mobility solutions to city-specific needs

Projects sometimes find it challenging to deliver adequate solutions, as they might lack specificity and might not be grounded in real problems and needs. The metaCCAZE project has designed a specific and innovative approach to tailor its' final output to each participating city's needs.

This approach is referred to as metadesign because each innovative solution is designed during the project, constantly monitored and adapted according to what is included in each city's Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan.

During the initial stage of the project, each city was assigned some innovative solutions (use cases) that have been selected depending on the outcomes of its' SUMP and defined by the project's partners. During the project, the use cases were finetuned as metaCCAZE partners and city managers collaborate to shape and design specific activities to gather citizens' input to better define these use cases.

This phase was centred on constant follow-ups between the project's partners and cities' managers to ensure that the input was included in the shaping of their city's needs and the prototypes for the use cases. To allow for this, it was necessary to predefine governance and business models on the side of operational and functional ones that are based on citizen and city needs.

The goal was to create a model of constant adaptability and follow-up by project partners. To achieve this, the third part of the metadesign approach focused on organising in-person events that brought together the cities' managers and citizens and stakeholders to finally redefine these innovative solutions. This phase was grounded in creating adaptive guidelines that were offered by experts in project management and planning, but not in a top-down manner. Each city was able to shape its format and customise the activity according to its needs and the type of event it sought to create.

To be sure that this was achieved, constant collaboration and conversation among project partners was at the core of this phase to ensure that everyone's feedback was included. At the end of this phase, each city was equipped with organisational and communication materials that helped the design of their unique event with their community.

This not only helped to ensure that every future use case will deliver a tailored solution, based on each city's need, but that the process is grounded in what citizens and stakeholders need and desire; thereby, ultimately creating more resilient and sustainable mobility futures.
