In recent weeks, the Italian city of Parma played host to two notable sustainable mobility events - an experience that has underlined the city's commitment to being a sustainable mobility trailblazer.
From 1-3 October 2024, the city hosted the CIVITAS Forum 2024, a conference attended by sustainable mobility experts and advocates from across Europe. On the final day of the Forum, a special side event was held for Italian city leaders and mobility experts - the CIVINET Italia Forum 2024.
The timing and location of both events were no coincidence, given CIVINET Italia's involvement in the broader CIVITAS Community. Supported by ISINNOVA, CIVINET Italia serves as a platform for Italian cities to share experiences and best practices in sustainable mobility. Its mission is to provide up-to-date information channels and foster dialogue on innovative policies, funding, and European programs that support sustainable mobility.
The CIVINET Italia Forum 2024 highlighted the strategic role of the CIVINET in advancing sustainable mobility, offering Italian cities practical support in designing and implementing innovative urban policies aligned with the European Union's mobility goals. Speakers at the event included representatives from EUROCITIES, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT), ANCI, Euromobility, MOST, ISFORT, the National Observatory on Shared Mobility, the Piedmont Region, Zona Ovest of Turin, SRM Bologna, and the municipalities of Parma and Vico Equense.
During the session titled From CIVITAS to CIVINET Italy: Opportunities for Italian Cities in Sustainable Mobility, discussions centered on accessing European funds to support urban mobility projects. These funding mechanisms include the Connecting Europe Facility, Cohesion Funds, Horizon Europe, the InvestEU program, and the Innovation Fund. Such financial tools are critical in supporting initiatives that drive the green transition in Italian cities.
As interest in sustainable mobility continues to grow across Italy, urban centres are challenged to decide how, and if, they will adapt to the need for a more sustainable urban mobility transition. Cities, like Parma, have shown a clear commitment to a more sustainable path.
Future events hosted by CIVINET Italia can be found on their webpage.
