As a Replication City in the MOBILITIES FOR EU project, the Municipality of Ioannina, located in Greece, is implementing targeted actions to promote sustainable urban mobility—placing a strong emphasis on raising awareness among the younger generation.
Sixth-grade students at the 3rd Primary School of Ioannina “Maroutseio” took part in the first pilot workshop titled “Climate Change and Sustainable Mobility”, organised in collaboration with Mr Georgios Stylos, Laboratory Teaching Staff at the Department of Primary Education, University of Ioannina.
During the session, students reflected on and mapped their daily school routes. Through experiential and interactive activities, they were introduced to key concepts of sustainable mobility. By the end of the workshop, each student had redesigned their personal “school route” based on environmentally responsible choices.
This activity forms part of a pilot initiative under the project’s Local Dissemination Strategy and is expected to expand to more schools across the city.
The Deputy Mayor of Ioannina, Mr Thomás Giotitsas, actively supports the rollout of such initiatives—not only in his official capacity, but also driven by his personal belief in the power of experiential learning. As he emphasises:
“Today’s students are tomorrow’s citizens, and we have a duty to offer them experiences that foster ecological awareness and a sense of responsibility.”
