Inclusive Urban Mobility Summer School: Programme now available

Ghent is set to once again take the lead in sustainable and inclusive urban development by hosting the Inclusive Urban Mobility Summer School 2025. Organised by Ghent University, in collaboration with EIT Urban Mobility, this international programme designed to explore how our cities move and ensure mobility systems are accessible, affordable and equitable for all. 

The programme invites Master’s and PhD students, early-career professionals and researchers from around the globe to engage in a week-long deep dive into the future of urban mobility including but not limited to sustainability, artificial intelligence, accesibility, social inclusion, and more. 

The 2025 programme is now live, featuring a powerhouse lineup of academics, policymakers, and mobility experts who will share insights and lead immersive workshops.

Confirmed highlights from the programme include: 

  • Keynote by Joris Vandenbroucke, Ghent Alderman for Mobility 
  • Tommy Zonnekein (NMBS-SNCB) on real-world accessibility in national rail transport 
  • Prof. Dr. Sidharta Gautama on the role of AI in mobility systems 
  • Dr. Koos Fransen on using storytelling to drive urban change (STR.AAT workshop) 
  • Dr. Lluis Martinez on inclusive digital and shared mobility solutions 
  • Profs. Martina Lohmeier & Matthias Kowald on how behaviour shapes urban planning 
  • Karen Sheire & Lucas Van Hijfte on bicycles as tools to fight transport poverty 
  • Jelten Baguet & Jasmien Jacques (ShareDiMobiHub & Hoppin) on Mobihubs and the HIT-tool (Hub Inclusivity Test) 
  • Prof. Dr. Ate Poorthuis on the challenges of mapping accessibility 
  • Marjolein Hantson sharing lessons from the Belbus Project 
  • Plus session contributions from Evelyn Boone, Gaelle Leon & Badra Dhat, and more. 

Participants will engage in panel discussions, technical site visits, group projects, and guided tours of Ghent and Bruges. Social and networking activities will create space for meaningful connections and informal exchanges with peers and experts. Participants will earn 3 ECTS credits upon completion. PhD students from Ghent University may be eligible for fully funded participation through the Doctoral Schools.
