How Zagreb improved safety on public transport

Zagreb Electric Tram (ZET), the city's biggest public transport operator, carried out a thorough modernisation of its fleet that included the installation of a security system, which did not exist in the past.

The modernisation of ZET's fleet improved energy efficieny in the new trams and buses with the help of co-financing from CIVITAS ELAN. Furthermore, accessibility and general levels of comfort have increased. For enhanced safety and security, it was decided to install CCTV cameras on 200 new vehicles. In addition, cockpits were equipped with an S.O.S. button for a fast and efficient transfer of information in case of security incidents. Educational workshops were organised for citizens on safe and secure use of public transport. Finally, public transport drivers went through a training programme, as well.
