Funchal hosts an urban orienteering contest to promote sustainable mobility
On 19 July Funchal´s City Hall (Câmara Municipal do Funchal - CMf) promoted an orienteering contest for the general public from the age of five to 75, including professional athletes, in the old part of the city. This initiative aimed to promote sustainable mobility.
With increasing traffic, it is important to change habits and improve other forms of active mobility such as walking. CIVITAS-MIMOSA actions and objectives were also promoted in the Orienteering Contest.This campaign also aimed to disseminate the reasons for choosing ecological transport, and how it benefits several domains, such as economy, society and health to participants. However, mobility is a social responsibility for all of us, in which it is important that all citizens contribute, so that the city can achieve a life-style that conforms to the principles of sustainable mobility.To collect initial baseline data, a survey was made exclusively for all participants of this event. The purpose of this survey was to measure the mobility habits/lifestyle and the awareness with the CIVITAS MIMOSA initiative. The results obtained revealed a strong dependence towards the car and a lack of awareness regarding the project.
