Free bus tickets for Christmas shoppers in San Sebastián

CIVITAS Initiative

Christmas shoppers that park their car on one of the Park & Ride sites in San Sebastián will receive free bus tickets to reach the city centre. This action is part of a wider collaboration programme between the city and shopkeepers to promote comfortable shopping in San Sebastián. The city aims to spread the word about Park & Ride among visitors from the wider region.

During the holiday season, between 22 December and 5 January, it is not necessary to go to the San Sebastián city centre by car. Visitors from the wider region can park their car at one of three Park & Ride sites in the outskirts of the city, where they will receive free public transport tickets to reach the city centre. The signs directing the public to the Park & Ride areas have been improved and more information about public transport is now available at the Park & Ride sites. A special supplement about the action was included in the regional newspaper “Diaro Vasco” to inform citizens from the Guipuzkoa province. In addition, 13.000 leaflets have been distributed among French families that live just across the border and regularly visit San Sebastián for shopping. Those that buy presents in one of the 900 associated shops receive another free bus ticket to travel back to their car. Alternatively, they can opt for a free ride in a bicycle taxi (Txita) to reach their car.It is not necessary to stroll around with your shopping bags, as you can leave them for free at a central depot until you are done with your shopping. Inhabitants from San Sebastián and visitors that are staying in a hotel can make use of the free delivery service carried out by the bicycle taxis. This way private cars are not necessarily the best option for these groups to go shopping for Christmas. We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy 2010!
