Energising the streets in Aalborg

CIVITAS Initiative

On 5 March 50 people gathered at one of Aalborg’s finest venues, the Utzon Centre, to celebrate the arrival of ten brand new electric cars. Among the guests were the ten families who will test the electric cars for the next three months.

The City of Aalborg and private company ChoosEV made an agreement to test ten new electric vehicles in Aalborg. In total, 80 families will test the ten cars during the following two years. Each family will test one car for three months.More than 750 families signed up, and ten of them have now been selected for the first three months trials. The cars were patiently waiting for their new families in front of the Utzon Centre Saturday morning. The sky was blue, the sun was shining and reflected in the dark blue water of the Limfjord. Spring seemed finally on its way to Aalborg as the families were welcomed to the centre by ChoosEV project manager, Tina Houlberg. After a quick breakfast in the restaurant, balloons and candy for the kids, the participants moved upstairs into the auditorium to get the final instructions from ChoosEV. Alderman for the Technical Department, Ms. Mariann Nørgaard spoke to the families just outside the Utzon Centre. She mentioned the importance of the trials, to test real electric cars addressing real transport demands in real families. After handing out the keys for the cars, the participants took a few rounds on a nearby track and together they took off into the city and into a new way of transport for the next three months. ChoosEV is testing electric cars in several Danish cities. Aalborg is the first of the cities to test fabricated electric cars and the second city to start the trials. ChoosEV will present the first results of the test at the Clean Vehicles, Clean Fuels, Cleaner Cities conference in Donostia-San Sebastián 15th and 16th of June 2011.
