Cycle chic competition takes over Ljubljana

CIVITAS Initiative

Partners of  the CIVITAS ELAN Project in Ljubljana, Embassy of Denmark and Tourism Ljubljana are preparing a photo-exhibition of a famous Danish bicycle photographer Mikael Colville Andersen, that will take place from 19 September to 25 October 2011. His work showing urban “bicycle chic” in Copenhagen will be displayed on Ljubljanica riverbank promenade. During his visit, the Danish artist will also give a lecture on urban cycling culture in Denmark and he may also join the cycling parade on the same day that will be organised by the Cyclist Network of Ljubljana.

To make this exhibition, which is entitled “Ljubljana – Copenhagen – two cities – one bicycle” even bigger, the network, in cooperation with CIVITAS ELAN, on 31 May launched a photo-competition with an appeal to competitors to capture “cycle-chic” moments in Ljubljana. After 31 July, the jury will select 20 photos that will accompany Andersen’s exhibition. Cycling has become quite strong in recent months, with the Cyclist Network of Ljubljana, CIVITAS ELAN and many other partners organising several successful cycling parades. One of them was on World Earth Day, 22 April, with around 100 participants and a “flash-mob” performance on the main street through city centre. It was also an event for raising awareness among cyclists, who should be more careful while riding in pedestrian zones – for this opportunity special leaflets were produced with an appeal “This is an area of attention! Cyclists, ride slowly, with the speed of a pedestrian!”. On 13 May, Vice-Mayor and a professor of architecture, Janez Koželj, led a cycling tour through the heritage of the most famous Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik and his colleagues. A day later a cycling tour to Ljubljana marshland Barje was organised to highlight the potential of cycling in a pristine nature area in the outskirts of the city. Cyclists of Ljubljana gathered together again on 3 June to demonstrate how cycling infrastructure in the city could be improved – by placing a red carpet on the “missing” cycling path.
