CIVITAS is excited to share the call for applications for the ‘EU Green Capital and EU Green Leaf Awards 2027, an initiative led by the European Commission. The awards aim to recognise cities that have implemented the most impactful environmental initiatives in improving the quality of life for their inhabitants while reducing both local and global environmental impact.

 Who is eligible to apply?

The EU Green Capital Award – Available for cities with over 100,000 inhabitants.

The EU Green Leaf Award – Available for smaller towns and cities with more than 20,000 inhabitants.

This year, CIVITAS encourages your city to take part and platform its achievements in implementing citizen-centred urban planning!

Previous winners of the European Green Capital Award include several Civitas Cities, such as Vitoria-Gasteiz, for their work in placing mobility at the heart of decarbonisation. From expanding green spaces and creating integrated and inclusive urban planning to advancing smart and connected mobility options, cities are encouraged to share their inspiring stories and best practices!

With 75% of Europeans living in urban areas, the impact of transport-related greenhouse gas emissions – accounting for approximately a quarter of Europe’s total emissions – is most acutely felt in cities. Reducing these emissions is critical to achieving a 90% reduction in GHG emissions by 2050 as outlined in the European Green Deal.

Could your CIVITAS City be the next EU Green Capital or EU Green Leaf Award winner?

Winning cities will not only receive a financial prize but will also join the ever-growing network of leading European cities that share a common vision and expertise, inspiring others to follow their lead.

 How to apply:

Cities interested in applying are invited to register for the contest via the EU survey, to access relevant documents and application form. The deadline for submission is 15 April 2025.
