CIVITAS Projects: Highlights over the last six months

CIVITAS projects continue to advance innovative, inclusive, and impactful mobility solutions across Europe. Over the past six months, projects have delivered outputs that strengthen the CIVITAS knowledge base and provide concrete value for cities advancing sustainable mobility. The diversity of project maturity levels and implementation contexts has resulted in a wide range of exploitable outcomes spanning digital tools, data-driven methodologies, co-creation approaches, pilot deployments, and capacity-building activities.
This update provides a consolidated overview of recent achievements from across the CIVITAS Community.
- Tools for planning and service optimisation, including digital platforms, simulation tools, operational optimisers, and decision-support instruments.
- Structured shared knowledge, aggregating scientific publications, webinars, transferable insights, and cross-cluster learning resources on specific solutions.
Key achievements in Co-Creation and Stakeholder Engagement
Capturing methods and tools that support community-centred design, participatory processes, and stakeholder engagement.
- DECARBOMILE – Released the Generic Business Model, a replicable template designed to help cities structure localised, value-driven delivery ecosystems aligned with operators, municipalities and citizens.
- GreenTurn and CodeZERO – Co-hosted a European-wide webinar on consumer behaviour in e-commerce and effective communication strategiesto engage industry stakeholders.
- MOBILITIES FOR EU – Presented E-City Game, an interactive tool enabling citizens to explore energy districts and smart charging concepts.
- JUST STREETS – Delivered Superblockify, a Python-based tool that helps cities co-design and simulate future superblock configurations.
- REALLOCATE
- Prepared the Walk Audit participatory tool, enabling communities and planners to jointly assess walkability and inclusivity of local streets
- Developed a tool to show VR from a child’s perspective, creating a 3D “before/after” model of school street interventions and an accompanying VR app.
- Released MapEngage, an intuitive participatory mapping application enabling residents to leave proposals and comments directly on a digital city map, facilitating community input for inclusive planning.
Key achievements in Data and Impact Assessment
Covering advances in data spaces, analytical capacities, harmonisation efforts, and evaluation frameworks.
- URBANE – Finalised the Impact Assessment Radar, helping cities assess readiness for adopting urban logistics innovations.
- DISCO – Released the e-course “Mastering Evaluation for Sustainable Urban Logistics Solutions” to help build capacity on methodologies and dashboards.
- AMIGOS – Advanced theBig Data Platform and AI-based real-time analytics platformenabling cities to store, process, and integrate diverse mobility and environmental datasets.
- REALLOCATE
- Developed theSidewalk Scanner, a LiDAR-based tool that assesses accessibility, quality and geometry of public spaces, producing point clouds and maps for pre-/post-evaluation.
- Piloted AI and 3D road space modelling, using computer vision to analyse drone video of intersections and track pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles.
Key achievements in Tools for Service Optimisation
Including digital platforms, simulation tools, operational optimisers, and decision-support instruments.
- URBANE
- Developed the Smart Contract Generator using blockchain for secure, traceable recording of shipment events end-to-end.
- Delivered CitIQore, a domain-specific app integrated into the Digital Twin, enabling non-technical users to simulate last-mile scenarios.
- Finalised the Last-Mile Deliveries Orchestrator (via GEL Proximity), coordinating parcel redistribution through micro-hubs and eco-friendly couriers.
- DISCO – Expanded the Digital Marketplace for Warehousing and Storage Capacity(WareM&O), connecting warehouse owners and tenants to optimise space use.
- UNCHAIN – Congestion Forecasting and Safe Route Planning Tool, integrating accident and infrastructure data to optimise safe and efficient delivery routing.
- UPPER – Introduced the EMY App, enabling companies to support sustainable commuting via mobility budgets, multimodal routing and reimbursement tools.
- SPINE – Published the Mobility Solutions Factsheets covering behavioural nudges, evidence engines, operational optimisers, and digital infrastructure tools.
Key achievements in Structured shared knowledge
Aggregating scientific publications, webinars, transferable insights, and cross-cluster learning resources on specific solutions.
- metaCCAZE – Published several peer-reviewed scientific studies, including:
- Large-scale drone experimentation.
- Pick-up and drop-off duration and its stochastic behaviour inmobility-on-demand services.
- Optimisation model for the electric bus charging station location.
- Approaches to extending electric bus charging infrastructure by incorporating charging schedules and energy pricing.
- SPINE, GEMINI, and SUM – Co-organised the webinar “How MaaS Is Changing Cities,” presenting approaches from Rouen (FR), Turin (IT), and Larnaca (CY) and discussing interoperability, stakeholder engagement and scalable service models.
Stay tuned for the next round of highlights from our CIVITAS projects!
