CIVITAS Insight on bike sharing published

CIVITAS Initiative

The 10th CIVITAS Insight, one of a series of more than 20 publications being developed under the CIVITAS CAPITAL project, is now available for download. It gives information on bike-sharing and its ability to improve the cycling culture in cities and to encourage people to cycle more.

Bike-sharing systems provide public access to bicycles for a limited time, a concept which has been successfully exported globally. At the time of writing there are nearly 1,000 bike-sharing schemes around the world with an estimated fleet of more than 1.2 million bicycles. Although bike sharing is relatively recent, it is becoming an important means of urban transport in cities all over the world.

This CIVITAS Insight is one of a series of 23 publications which explore measures and concepts in sustainable urban mobility in greater depth, and are intended to be read by transport policy makers and practitioners. Many are accompanied by examples from CIVITAS cities, as well as the current state of play and the future outlook.

Download and read the 10th CIVITAS Insight, or access all published and forthcoming Insights on the Key Publications page. Have you been inspired by what you've read in this Insight? Then join the discussion in the Thematic Group for Car-independent Lifestyles or on CIVITAS Interactive.
