Urban Freight Workshop and Study Tour on Cyclelogistics and Urban Freight Deliveries

Urban areas across Europe are suffering from negative impacts of urban freight transport, like poor air quality, CO₂ emissions, congestion, nuisance and safety issues.

The city of Gothenburg has successfully dealt with the problem of urban freight delivery by adopting access restrictions, but also by implementing green logistics measures (more info @ http://www.innerstadengbg.se/).

The Urban Freight Logistics Thematic Group of CIVITAS, the European Cyclists' Federation and the city of Gothenburg organizaed on June 14th in Gothenburg, Sweden:

• a ‘Cyclelogistics Empowerment Workshop for Cities’ and
• a Study Tour on ‘How to manage urban freight deliveries’ .

Gary Armstrong, Cyclelogistics expert, run the workshop, featuring practical sessions and presentations on the advantages and disadvantages of various cycle delivery options and local opportunities to encourage Cyclelogistics.

The Cyclelogistics project, running from 2014 to 2017, is aimed at reducing energy consumption and emissions from freight transport in urban areas, by promoting the use of cargo-bicycles for goods transport in cities as an alternative to fossil-fuel traditional vehicles and by stimulating municipalities to implement favorable framework conditions that facilitate the continuining development of near zero emissions urban logistics.  

During the afternoon a representative of the city of Gothenburg presented the results of 8 years of green policies in urban freight green deliveris and guided a thematic visit of the city explaining the City Delivery Concept: "Stadsleveransen".

More than 20 participants from cities and private companies attended both the workshop and the study tour.
